DAY TWO
Dearest Mother,
Just a quick note to inform you of our progress.
Look out of the window, you will see that the field opposite has risen by about 2 feet due to all the waste from the tunnel. I hope no one becomes suspicious.
Misty informs me that we may be slightly off course. Tell Doris not to worry if her bed starts to tilt at a funny angle.
Dad rather messed up. It seems that he is deeply into cookery mode, so we’ve ended up with a large dessert spoon for a shovel and a measuring jug instead of a bucket. I guess we’ll have to make do, but this oversight may slow up progress.
Instead of safety helmets he supplied us with two colanders. Misty’s kept slipping, so we have tied her ears in a knot and this appears to have solved the problem. For illumination we have taped a bicycle lamp to the front of each of them.
The cake he baked also proved to be a bit of a disappointment. It appeared at first sight to be ideal, but on closer inspection it turned out only to contain a nail file. I told you he skimped on the fillings! Have asked him to rethink his ideas on a larger scale.
The canary is quite cute and keeps singing all the time, although this can get a bit tiresome in this confined space.
Can I suggest to keep your spirits up, that you and the rest of the ladies in your ward whistle a few verses of ‘Always look on the bright side of life.’ The singing last night really encouraged Misty and we made good progress.
I have to go now, Misty’s lamp battery is running flat and I can’t really see well enough to write further. I can sense that we’re getting close though.
` Keep happy, will be in touch soon with further news.
Love from,
Your eldest son.
p.s. Do some creative origami with this note, so as not to alert the nurses to what’s going on.
